Onion Games’ Mon Amour is an ‘insta-death kissing game’

    Nintendo Switch

Onion Games, the Tokyo-based indie studio behind the likes of Black Bird, Moon, and Dandy Dungeon has a new game on the way: an “insta-death kissing game” for Nintendo Switch, called Mon Amour.

Mon Amour is one of the games that will be featured during BitSummit Gaiden, an online indie game festival scheduled for June 27 and 28. There’ll be a limited edition demo released that same weekend, which will hopefully offer a bit more insight into what, exactly, an “insta-death kissing game” is.

Onion Games is known for unconventional, subversive, often humorous games. Moon: Remix RPG Adventure is a surreal satire of JRPGs, originally launched for PlayStation in 1997 (but only in Japan) and ported to Switch last year (but only in Japan, for now, though an English release is on the way). Dandy Dungeon: Legend of Brave Yamada is a comical dungeon crawler about a 36-year-old game programmer who hates his job and starts making oddball roguelike RPGs on the side that star himself as the hero. Black Bird is a shoot-’em-up about eating the rich.

Judging from the official description, it doesn’t look like Onion Games is getting any more orthodox with Mon Amour:

One fateful morning, three love-hungry witches appeared before Baron Soisoir, of the Çavaçava Kingdom.

In an instant, all of the kingdom’s citizens were whisked away to Babastille, the world of nightmares.

It’s your time to shine, Baron Beard! Rescue everyone with your kiss!

BitSummit is Japan’s biggest indie game festival, held annually in Kyoto. An in-person event isn’t possible this year due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, so like a lot of other trade shows, BitSummit is doing an online version instead in the form of BitSummit Gaiden. There’ll be a livestreamed show on Twitch, a Discord server hosting live developer chats, Let’s Plays, and giveaways, and free access to featured games through a partnership with Utomik.
