Mobile tactical RPG Dragon Quest Tact heads west next year

    Game News

Dragon Quest Tact, a free-to-play tactical RPG for mobile, is set for a global release in early 2021. Pre-registrations are open now for an Android-only closed beta test, which is due to begin soon.

Dragon Quest Tact sees players recruiting iconic Dragon Quest monsters as allies and engaging in grid-based tactical battles a la Final Fantasy Tactics. As you’d probably expect, being a mobile RPG, there’s a gacha element where you can scout for new monsters using gems that are either bought or earned by playing, though Square Enix says “an ever-growing list of freely obtainable monsters means that you can grow your roster without spending at all!”

Here’s Square Enix’s summary of the game:

In DRAGON QUEST TACT, players will orchestrate battles by directing familiar monsters in heated tactical battles. Players will need to strategically select units with different strengths and abilities to fight on a grid-like map, and can recruit new iconic DRAGON QUEST monsters as allies and power them up in order to take on even more ferocious battles. The Battle Road offers additional challenge to daring players and contains additional story content for players eager to learn more about their monster allies. In this simple-yet-deep tactical RPG game, players can enjoy a form of combat new to the DRAGON QUEST series with a large roster of beloved monsters.

If you want to take part in the closed beta test, you can try to get a spot by pre-registering Dragon Quest Tact through Google Play. Pre-registering doesn’t guarantee you beta access—participants will be chosen at random—but it costs nothing to sign up for a chance. There’s no word on exactly when this beta will start, but it’s apparently coming soon.

Dragon Quest Tact launched in Japan in July this year, and it’s already seen more than 10 million downloads since. It joins a number of other Dragon Quest mobile games, like Dragon Quest of the Stars, which came out in the west earlier this year, and Dragon Quest Walk, a Pokemon Go-style augmented reality game that, sadly, remains Japan-only.

Dragon Quest Tact will be available from early 2021 for Android and iOS, as a free download with in-app purchases. It supports English, French, Traditional Chinese, and Korean languages.
