Sephiroth is coming to Super Smash Bros. Ultimate in December

    Nintendo Switch

Sephiroth, the famed villain of Final Fantasy VII whose theme song “One-Winged Angel” taught a whole generation of nerds to learn at least a few words of Latin, will soon be joining the eclectic roster of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.

An announcement at The Game Awards yesterday confirmed Sephiroth as the third character in the Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Fighters Pass 2, available from December 2020. The announcement trailer sees Sephiroth getting up to all his usual mischief, summoning meteors, skewering people with his impractically-long sword, turning into a god, and so on.

Another video will be released on Friday, 18 December to share more detailed information about how Sephiroth works in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. No specific date was given for when in December he’d be available to download, but it presumably won’t be before next Friday’s video.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate has a huge roster of fighters from all corners of the gaming world, to the point of looking a little like a big-budget Mugen. It’s a game where Street Fighter‘s Ryu, Castlevania‘s Simon Belmont, Final Fantasy VII‘s Cloud Strife, Minecraft‘s Steve, Bayonetta‘s Bayonetta, Persona 5‘s Joker, and plenty of others can already duke it out with one another, so Sephiroth joining the ranks doesn’t seem too far-fetched at all.

There are still three more unannounced spots in Fighters Pass 2, so feel free to continue with your wildest dreams and guesses—after Minecraft Steve, anything’s possible. Sakuna? Agent York? BoxBoy? Don and Katsu? Why not?

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is available now for Nintendo Switch, as are its two (so far) Fighters Pass DLC bundles.
